Booklist - 04/01/2026 Lex is almost 10, and there’s only one thing he wants for his birthday: the brand new Apollo XL phone. But money is tight. Lex’s parents run a small local bookstore, and business has been slow. They offer him a simpler, less exciting model, but Lex has his heart set on the fancier phone. Determined to earn the money himself, Lex teams up with his friends Cass and DJ, and after a string of failed money- making schemes, inspiration finally strikes. The trio begins selling handmade Valentine’s Day cards, and the money starts rolling in. But when Lex realizes just how much his parents are struggling to keep the bookstore alive, his dream suddenly feels smaller, and he tries to support the bookstore instead. Refreshingly, his parents don’t let him take financial responsibility for their business, allowing him to just be a kid. Doucet’s loose, bright artwork nicely balances comedic moments (like a truly disastrous hot cocoa stand) with Lex’s realistic concerns about his parents’ financial situation. This heartfelt graphic novel celebrating friendship and creativity is nicely grounded in the economic realities many families face. - Copyright 2026 Booklist.
